Gijs Schumacher

Prof. Schumacher’s research focuses on the role of emotions in politics and their potential to strengthen democratic processes. His work examines how emotional responses shape political attitudes, decision-making, and behavior, with a particular focus on polarization, populism, and the rise of radical right and authoritarian tendencies. Using primarily experimental methods, he studies political behavior and attitudes alongside physiological and neural responses to better understand the emotional foundations of political engagement.
