Continuing the consortium:
Welcome to the Summer GUTS newsletter!

Dear GUTS researchers and supporters,

Welcome to the first summer edition of the GUTS newsletter! As the season brings longer days and a well-deserved break for many, we’ve prepared a shorter newsletter to keep you updated on our latest developments. We are excited to announce that the first scans for Work Package 1 have officially kicked off in Amsterdam, marking a significant milestone in our research journey.

We also look back fondly on the memorable Guts Summer Event on the beach a couple of weeks ago. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect, share ideas, and enjoy fun games together.

As we embrace the summer spirit, we wish everyone a relaxing and rejuvenating break. Enjoy your summer!

Inaugural lectureThijs Bol

On May 30, 2024, Professor dr. Thijs Bol delivered an insightful inaugural lecture titled "De werking van willekeur. Over de rol van toeval in ongelijkheid" in the field of Sociology.

Contrary to the growing belief that individuals are solely responsible for their success, much of success and failure is determined by randomness—processes beyond our control. This thought-provoking perspective raises a critical question: if people have limited influence over their outcomes, how can we justify the increasing inequality?

HALFpipe workshop GUTS

On Wednesday, June 5th, Yara Toenders and Ilya Veer hosted a HALFpipe workshop for all GUTS PhDs and postdocs working with fMRI data.

HALFpipe developer Ilya provided a comprehensive tutorial on using this tool for reproducible fMRI data analyses. After a delightful lunch, Ilya and Yara guided participants through hands-on sessions, to apply HALFpipe to their own (GUTS) data.

Eveline Crone and Yara Toenders chosen for Scientific Advisory Board Stichting MIND Us

Meet the GUTS team

In each newsletter, we put different members of the GUTS team in the spotlight. In this newsletter, we want to highlight some of our newest GUTS members.

Julianna Lopez
Research Assistant
WP1 Rotterdam

As a research assistant for WP1 of the GUTS project, I facilitate communication between the GUTS team at the EUR and EMC (Erasmus Medical Centre). I am primarily involved with data collection for the GUTS pilot, including MRI scans, behavioral experiments, and questionnaires.

I have a background in psychology and neuroscience during my bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and sciences. Currently, I’m finishing my master's in cognitive neuroscience at Utrecht University. During my internship at the EUR, I studied the effects of adversity and family relationships on structural brain development in adolescents.

Mo Priya Somai
Research Assistant
WP1 Rotterdam

In the upcoming year I will be joining the GUTS project as a research assistant for WP1, with a focus on EEG data collection during tasks that measure processes related to self-regulation.

I obtained my Research Master’s degree in Neuroscience and Cognition from Utrecht University in 2023. Throughout my studies, I deepened my interest in both conscious and subconscious social behavior. Accordingly, my internships projects included research on trust in humans versus artificial intelligence using modified trust games, research on intentional binding through gamified tasks in a virtual world whilst collecting EEG data, and research on specific anosmia’s caused by genetic variation in the olfactory receptor genome and how this could lead to altered subconscious reception of social information.

Fun fact: I like birds and I would love to spend more time birdwatching in nature!

Milan Emanuel
Research Assistant
WP2 Leiden

I am a research assistant for WP2 of the GUTS project. My primary focus is on fMRI measurements and communication with the research group within this project. I hold a Research Master’s in Cognitive and Neurosciences and a Bachelor’s in Sociology.

As a researcher, I am interested in emotions and mental well-being. In addition to investigating the underlying neural processes, I pay attention to the social structures that shape human behavior and feelings. Besides my work at GUTS, I also work as a research assistant at the Fearless project, which focuses on emotion regulation in children and adolescents.

Besides my deep passion for neuroscience and human behavior, I love nature and the sea, which is expressed in my other passion: surfing!

Roos van Rosmeulen
Research Assistant
WP2 Leiden

My name is Roos, and I recently started as a research assistant within WP2 of the GUTS consortium. I have a background in Biomedical Sciences and am about to complete my master's in September, specializing in Medical Neuroscience with additional courses in Psychology. My main interest is the interaction between neuroscience, neurobiology and psychology, focusing on the underlying mechanisms of brain functions and behavior.

Two fun facts about me: (1) I love dancing and playing the piano, and (2) during my studies, I studied and worked at six different universities from Maastricht to Leiden. I spent a lot of time in public transport, where I try to learn new skills - currently, I'm learning Spanish!

Dana Saleh
Research Assistant
WP3 Amsterdam

Hi everyone, my name is Dana and since this month I have been working as a research assistant for WP3. After my bachelor's in Psychobiology and master's in health promotion and behavior change, I was looking forward to engaging in both practical tasks and scientific thinking. I am very excited that, in the role of a research assistant, I can roll up my sleeves, interact with people from many different backgrounds, and contribute scientifically. Besides supporting the research group, I will mainly be involved in recruiting participants for the WP3 cohort, a challenging but dynamic task!

Lisanne Ooijevaar
Communications Officer
WP1 Rotterdam

Hi! My name is Lisanne Ooijevaar and I started as a communications officer for the GUTS project. I will mainly focus on social media strategy, making content, and providing advice on recruitment.

I love making connections with my peers and attending social events. That’s why I know the latest trends and what adolescents like! I recently graduated as an editorial student at Mediacollege Amsterdam. Because of my study, I learned how to strike the right chord through text. I love to combine my age and knowledge to give the right advice, make content, and implement strategies!

IMPACT

Nieuwe online lessenserie
"Wat gebeurt er in mijn hoofd?"

GUTS researcher Anita Harrewijn (EUR), along with colleagues, Public Primary School De Tandem, and the EUR Studio, has created an online lesson series about mental health and the brain for primary school students. The goal is to teach primary school students more about mental health while also getting them excited about science.

The lesson series consists of three free online lessons, each half an hour long, covering the themes: fear & the brain, food & exercise, and concentration. Teachers can use the interactive lessons and accompanying exercises without any preparation. The lesson series is intended for students in grades 6-8. The students will learn about mental health and what the brain does in an accessible way.

Other scientists can use the lessons as an introduction for a visit to the classroom or, with the 'scientist's guide,' create a lesson about their research. We are happy to assist with this!

The team involved in this online lesson series includes: Anita Harrewijn, Hanan El Marroun, Linda Dekker, Minita Franzen, Pauline Jansen, Reshmi Marhe, and Yvette Grootjans. Johan Ong, Miriam Fuselier, and Roy Jansen from the EUR Studio created the videos, and Johan Nijdam developed the website. Teacher Roeland Harrewijn and students from Public Primary School De Tandem also helped develop this online lesson series.
